Pasture-Raised and Grass-Fed

At Homestead Harvest Herd, we raise our cows with a focus on natural, sustainable practices. Our cows roam freely on pasture, enjoying nutrient-dense grasses that contribute to their health and the quality of their milk. With daily handling, we ensure each cow is calm, well-socialized, and thrives in a peaceful, loving environment. We prioritize their well-being, feeding them with care and attention to detail, so they remain happy, healthy, and produce the finest milk for our family and yours.

HOW WE RAISE OUR HERDS

the hard work +  intention that goes into each cow

The Winslager Way

At Homestead Harvest Herd, we use genetic testing to ensure the health and productivity of our Mini Jersey cows. By analyzing traits and identifying potential genetic issues, we make informed breeding decisions, enhance the overall quality of our herd, and uphold our commitment to raising resilient and high-quality livestock.

why do we genetic test our calves?

Identifies genetic markers for hereditary diseases or conditions common in Mini Jerseys, such as BLV (Bovine Leukosis Virus) or specific genetic disorders.

Disease Screening

Genetic testing in Mini Jersey cows is a process that analyzes their DNA to identify specific traits such as A2/A2 milk production, polled genes (no horns), and chondrodysplasia (dwarfism). This testing ensures breeders can select for desired traits and avoid potential health issues, improving the quality and health of future generations. It helps confirm the heritage and genetics of each cow, maintaining breed standards and integrity.

what is genetic testing?

What is it +
                          why do we do it?

Genetic Testing

A chondro positive cow carries the gene for chondrodysplasia, a form of dwarfism that results in shorter legs and a more compact build. This trait is often desirable in miniature cattle. A chondro negative cow does not carry this gene and will have a standard, non-dwarf frame. If a chondro positive cow is bred with another positive, there’s a risk of having a calf with severe health issues, so careful breeding practices are important.

chondro +/-

A homozygous polled cow carries two copies of the polled gene, meaning all of its offspring will be naturally polled (born without horns), regardless of the mate. A heterozygous polled cow carries one polled gene and one horned gene, meaning its offspring have a 50% chance of being polled if bred with a horned cow.

Homo/Heterozygous polled

An A2/A2 cow produces only A2 beta-casein protein in its milk, which some people find easier to digest and less likely to cause discomfort. In contrast, an A1/A2 cow produces a mix of A1 and A2 proteins, with the A1 protein potentially being harder for some to digest. A2 milk is often preferred by individuals with sensitivities to regular dairy.
